About Aroma Therapy
Aroma Therapy imagines a spa visit through a coffee bean's eyes: a soft-lit room filled with candles, plants, and earth tones, all built around the aroma of coffee. In the product notes, Godard explains that the idea came after his girlfriend returned from a massage and he pictured the relaxing atmosphere she might have experienced as a coffee bean. The play on words did the rest.
It is a natural fit for a kitchen, a home coffee bar, or anyone who starts the day with a good roast, and it shows the same personified-character humor collectors know from his martini and olive work. A coffee bean instead of an olive
Godard has described this as his first coffee bean painting, and it marks a small but telling shift in his catalog: the same personified-character approach he built with olives and grapes, applied to the other drink that runs the day. It pairs easily with his kitchen and cafe pieces, and it makes a lighthearted companion for collectors who already own his cocktail work and want something for the morning side of the house.
About Michael Godard
From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"
Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
The signature style
His pop art is instantly recognizable, personified characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing. This piece trades the lounge for a candlelit spa and the olive for a coffee bean, and the joke still lands.
Beyond the canvas, and giving back
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
