About Champagne Shopper
This piece puts three of Godard's personified strawberry characters through a shopping trip rather than a night at the bar, dressed up and comparing shoes in what the artist has described as a scene inspired by his wife's own love of shopping. It carries the same bold, saturated color, sharp outlines, and comic character work that runs through his wider pop-art catalog, turned here toward wine-cellar and fashion themes instead of the martini and casino settings he is best known for.
Like the rest of his limited editions, the piece rewards close viewing for the small comic details in each figure's pose and expression. It appeals to collectors of wine cellar art, fashion-themed wall art, and Godard's wider grape and cork catalog. Editions, sizes & prices of this limited edition giclee
The print is released in a single documented, currently offered edition. The Artist Proof is hand-numbered rather than signed, since this title has no Signed and Numbered edition on the gallery's live listing. The price below is the current live listing price, and the edition shown is in stock at the time of review.
| Edition | Size | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Artist Proof Edition of 50 | 28" x 35" | $1,595 |
This is the only documented edition currently offered for this title; earlier G and Signed and Numbered runs from 2004 are sold out and are not part of the gallery's live listing, so they are not claimed here. Each print is a giclee, a fine-art process using archival pigment inks on canvas.
Fashion and shopping in Godard's work
The strawberry figures that recur across Godard's catalog function almost like recurring actors, showing up in different costumes and settings from painting to painting. Here, three of them take a shopping trip together, dressed for a night out and debating a pair of shoes, extending his personified-character style into a lighthearted retail scene rather than the bar or casino floor most collectors associate with his catalog. That makes the piece a natural companion to his wine-cellar and cocktail work while standing on its own as one of his more fashion-forward compositions.
About Michael Godard
Born March 10, 1963, and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
His pop art is instantly recognizable: personified olives, grapes, strawberries, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing, plus the hidden names, dates, and initials that reward repeat viewing. This piece applies that same craft to a fashion and shopping scene rather than a cocktail glass.
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
