About Chick Magnet

This piece plays its title as a literal pun: a wine bottle built like a magnet, topped with a horseshoe, drawing in a cluster of real baby chicks alongside a glossy pair of black high heels with red soles. It is one of Godard's newer releases, painted in the same bold, saturated color and theatrical exaggeration that has defined his work since the 1990s, applied here to a wry still life rather than a bar scene.

The piece appeals to collectors who enjoy Godard's sly, tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and his wider catalog of personified-object still lifes. If you are ready to start or grow a collection, browse the full range of Michael Godard art for sale.

A playful still life in Godard's work

Godard has never been shy about titling a piece with a wink, and this is one of his more playful recent examples of that habit. Rather than the personified olives, grapes, or strawberries most collectors associate with his catalog, this still life turns an ordinary wine bottle into the punchline, surrounded by literal baby chicks and a pair of statement heels. As a 2022 release, it sits alongside newer titles like Chocolate Kisses and Christmas Wine as part of Godard's continuing expansion beyond his original martini-and-olive subject matter.

About Michael Godard

Born March 10, 1963, and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. A friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis led him to answer with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."

His pop art is instantly recognizable: bold color, high-contrast backgrounds, theatrical exaggeration, and a satirist's sense of comic timing, the same qualities that make a punning still life like Chick Magnet feel at home in his catalog. He is also known for tucking hidden names, dates, and initials into his compositions, rewarding repeat viewing.

His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
