About Rat Pack
Rat Pack stages Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, and the rest of the pack in the old Sands casino, enjoying a game of billiards, a scene the artist describes as a common sight on the Vegas Strip in the sixties and seventies. In Godard's world, of course, they are all olives. The piece carries the high-contrast, character-driven pop-art style that has made him one of the best-known pop artists working today, turned here toward classic Las Vegas nightlife and gaming.
Like the rest of his limited editions, the piece rewards close viewing, with the fine detail and craftsmanship collectors expect from his catalog. Collectors furnishing a man cave, game room, or home bar with man cave art and poker room decor often gravitate toward it. Where the Las Vegas scene fits in Godard's work
Las Vegas is home turf for Godard, and the casino floor is one of his most natural settings. Rat Pack pairs the personified olive characters collectors know from his nightlife pieces with a real slice of Strip history, the old Sands casino and its most famous regulars, reimagined at the billiard table. That places the piece squarely alongside his gaming, gambling, and bar works, and makes it an easy entry point for anyone building a game room or home bar around Las Vegas art.
About Michael Godard
From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"
Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
The signature style
His pop art is instantly recognizable, personified olives, grapes, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing, plus the hidden details that reward repeat viewing. Rat Pack applies that same craft to the casino floor, casting Vegas legends as olives at the billiard table, which is exactly what you see here.
Beyond the canvas, and giving back
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes. This title joins a catalog of limited edition fine art he has been building for more than twenty years. For the complete story, read the full artist biography.
