About Commotion in the Ocean

This piece shows Godard reaching past the martini glass and casino table into the natural world, pairing sea life with the same bold-outline, saturated-color treatment that defines his cocktail characters. In his own words: "This was my 1st collaboration with Artist Jim Warren."

It is a reminder that Godard's visual system, personified figures set against dramatic backgrounds, was never limited to bar culture; nature and animal subjects have made up a substantial share of his catalog for years, running alongside dedicated bodies of work like his Safari Series. A collaboration with artist Jim Warren

Godard has described Commotion in the Ocean as his first collaboration with fellow artist Jim Warren, a departure from the solo martini-and-olive catalog most collectors associate with him. It sits alongside his other nature and wildlife pieces, including his dedicated Safari Series, for collectors who want to build out that side of his catalog.

About Michael Godard

From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"

Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."

The signature style

The personified-character approach he built around his martini olives extends here to a cast of sea creatures, each given its own pose and comic timing, set against the same high-contrast backgrounds and sharp outlines that define his style.

Beyond the canvas, and giving back

His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
