About Corleone-Tini
In the product notes, Godard calls Corleone-Tini the first piece in a new series he named American Icons, built around the films and television he grew up watching: "Here we have the Don in his unforgettable pose, always with his cat... This is the first of a new series I'm calling American Icons. They are the films and television shows I saw in my youth that will forever be engraved in my memory as a snapshot of my childhood."
The piece carries the bold color, sharp outlines, and playful character work collectors associate with his catalog, and it is a favorite with fans of cocktail and bar wall art from Michael Godard's catalog. A pop-culture parody in Godard's catalog
Corleone-Tini opens what Godard calls his American Icons series: works built around the films and television he grew up with, reimagined through his own personified-character style. Here his familiar olive character stands in for a classic mob-movie figure, cat in hand, in an instantly recognizable pose that lands the reference without needing a caption. It is the same trick he has used across his poker, blackjack, and casino canvases, borrowing a familiar image and filtering it through the bold color and comic timing that define his work, and it makes a natural companion to those gaming and nightlife pieces.
About Michael Godard
From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"
Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
The signature style
His pop art is instantly recognizable: personified olives, grapes, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing. The American Icons pieces apply that same craft to familiar pop-culture imagery, which is exactly what you see here.
Beyond the canvas, and giving back
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
