About Dancing with the Devil
Fire, smoke, and a martini glass share the frame in Dancing with the Devil, pushing Godard's signature cast of personified olives and strawberries beyond a simple cocktail scene into something more theatrical. The bold black background and sharp outlines carry the same character work that runs through his wider catalog, staged here with an added sense of danger and spectacle.
Music imagery running through the composition points to another thread in Godard's biography: before he painted full time, he spent years as a working drummer in Las Vegas bands, and that stage background surfaces repeatedly in pieces built around performance and spectacle. The nightlife and music thread in Godard's work
This piece sits alongside the other black-background nightlife scenes that first built Godard's reputation, where a martini glass, a performer's stage lighting, and a personified cast share equal billing. It is a natural companion for collectors drawn to his cocktail and bar wall art and to the music-adjacent pieces that reflect his own background as a musician.
About Michael Godard
From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"
Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
The signature style
His pop art is instantly recognizable, personified olives, grapes, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing. Dancing with the Devil applies that same craft to a smoke-and-fire nightlife scene, exactly what you see in this piece.
Beyond the canvas, and giving back
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
