"Don't Drink" belongs to the loose family of martini-and-lamppost scenes Michael Godard has returned to throughout his career, each one restaging the same nightlife moment from a different angle. Here the lit sign spelling out the title forces the young woman carrying her drink to spill it rather than sip it, a sight gag that only works because of how deliberately Godard stages light, shadow, and the personified olive riding in the glass. That kind of layered visual joke, more than any single subject, is what separates his black background nightlife scenes from ordinary bar-and-cocktail illustration; every prop in the frame, down to the martini-shaped glow overhead, is doing narrative work.
