About First Date Martini

First Date Martini sets up a sight gag in front of a giant martini glass: two olive characters hold hands shyly, each with an angelic halo overhead, while their shadow on the wall behind them dances as a devil with horns, a tail, and floating hearts, hinting at what is really on their minds. It carries the high-contrast, character-driven pop-art style that has made Godard one of the best-known pop artists working today, turned here toward a romantic theme.

Like the rest of his limited editions, the piece rewards close viewing, with the fine detail and craftsmanship collectors expect from his catalog. It is a favorite for bedroom and living room decor and romantic wall art, pairing playful characters with a romantic story. Where the martini fits in Godard's work

Every element of Godard's signature style traces back to a single first encounter with a martini glass, and First Date Martini leans directly into that origin story. The turning point in his career was a friend's request for a martini-themed birthday painting, and the personified olive that came out of it became the character collectors know best. Here that same cast plays out an angel-and-devil sight gag on a first night out, which makes the piece a natural companion to his other martini and olive works and an easy, warm entry point for a new collector.

About Michael Godard

From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"

Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."

The signature style

His pop art is instantly recognizable, personified olives, grapes, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing, plus the hidden details that reward repeat viewing. First Date Martini puts that craft to work on a romantic sight gag, with the olive characters at its center taking the lead.

Beyond the canvas, and giving back

His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes. This title joins a catalog of limited edition fine art he has been building for more than twenty years. For the complete story, read the full artist biography.
