About Michael Godard
Hell of A Martini belongs to the series that started Michael Godard's entire career, the body of work built on the very first personified olive he ever painted. A friend once asked him to create a birthday painting celebrating dirty martinis, and rather than a plain still life, Godard gave the olive in the glass a face, arms, and real personality, a decision made against a black background that would go on to define his visual identity, later intensified in fiery, high-energy pieces like this one.
