About Swirly-tini

Swirly-tini turns the martini glass itself into the subject: ribbons of blue, yellow, red, and green swirl and blend inside the glass like paint stirred into liquid, set against a cool grey backdrop. It is a more abstract, painterly take on the bar-culture themes Godard is known for, and a striking departure from the personified olive characters that first made his name. The bold, saturated color and theatrical eye that run through his pop-art catalog are all here, focused on motion and marbled color rather than a cast of characters.

Like the rest of his limited editions, the work rewards close viewing, with the fine detail and craftsmanship collectors expect from his catalog. It appeals to collectors of cocktail and bar wall art, martini and olive art, and limited edition giclee prints. Where the martini fits in Godard's work

The martini is the subject that started it all. Godard built his reputation on the personified olive, born from a friend's request for a martini-themed birthday painting decades ago, and the cocktail glass has been at the center of his work ever since. Swirly-tini shows a different side of that same fascination: instead of a character with a face and a personality, the color takes center stage, swirling inside the glass the way his personified fruit once danced around it. That makes the piece a natural companion to his martini and olive works and an easy entry point for a collector who loves the subject but wants a more abstract, color-forward take on it.

About Michael Godard

From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"

Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."

The signature style

His pop art is instantly recognizable, personified olives, grapes, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing, plus the hidden details that reward repeat viewing. Swirly-tini shows that the visual signature was never just the olive; it is the saturated color and theatrical composition that has defined his work for more than 30 years, here poured straight into the glass.

Beyond the canvas, and giving back

His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes. This title joins a catalog of limited edition fine art he has been building for more than twenty years. For the complete story, read the full artist biography.
