About Chasing Fireflies

This piece gives Godard's personified grape and strawberry characters a fairytale-forest setting, a departure from the black backgrounds most of his catalog is known for. The scene is filled with glowing fireflies and, by the artist's own description, hidden angels, faces, and hearts tucked into the trees, extending his signature habit of hidden details into a moodier, more romantic composition. It carries the same bold color, sharp outlines, and playful character work that run through his wider pop-art catalog, turned here toward the nature-and-wildlife side of his subject matter.

The piece appeals to collectors of safari-themed decor, nature and wildlife wall art, and Godard's wider catalog of personified-character romance scenes. If you are ready to start or grow a collection, browse the full range of Michael Godard art for sale.

A firefly-lit forest in Godard's work

Most of Godard's personified-character work plays out against a black background in a bar, casino, or cocktail setting; this piece moves that same cast into a glowing forest at night instead. The male grape character searches for fireflies for his strawberry love, who holds the glowing insects in an empty wine bottle, giving the piece a small love story similar in spirit to his Frog Triptych panels but set in the wild rather than a garden. That makes it a natural entry point into the nature-and-wildlife corner of a catalog most collectors first meet through his nightlife work.

About Michael Godard

Godard was born on March 10, 1963, and grew up in Pasadena, California, before eventually settling in Las Vegas, Nevada, the city most associated with his career. He studied at ArtCenter College of Design and later at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time.

A friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis led Godard to answer with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World." This piece extends that same character-driven craft, plus his habit of tucking hidden names, dates, and initials into a composition, into a nature scene rather than a cocktail glass.

His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
