About Daily Double
In the product notes, Godard explains the running joke in the piece: a client commissioned a horse-themed painting, and Godard gave some of the horses only three legs. Asked about it, his answer was, "oh really! When was the last time you saw an olive riding a horse with four legs?"
The piece layers several of Godard's recurring subjects at once, gambling, horses, and his signature olive and strawberry characters, a pattern that runs across a lot of his nightlife-and-risk catalog. Where horse racing fits in Godard's work
Daily Double is a good example of how Godard often builds a single scene around several of his favorite subjects at once rather than settling on one theme per canvas, letting a horse-racing reference sit comfortably beside his usual martini-and-olive cast. That layering is itself part of the appeal for longtime collectors, since a piece like this rewards repeat viewing the way a shared visual joke does, and it pairs naturally with his other gaming and gambling canvases.
About Michael Godard
From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"
Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
The signature style
His pop art is instantly recognizable: personified olives, grapes, and other characters set against high-contrast backgrounds, rendered with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing. Daily Double applies that same craft to a horse-racing scene, three-legged horses and all.
Beyond the canvas, and giving back
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
