The cards, chips, and glass are rendered with genuine detail: a towering stack of five-thousand-dollar chips, a lucky gold coin nodding to the superstitions poker players live by, and a hand that earns the title. "Big Slick" is poker slang for an ace and a king, and the other two cards on the table hint at a possible flush. About Michael Godard
Poker Chips, Big Slick sits on the serious, realistic end of Michael Godard's gambling and Las Vegas work, a commissioned, detail-heavy piece rather than one of his cartoon olive gags. It comes from a career whose success has funded one of the more sustained charitable commitments in contemporary pop art. After the loss of his teenage daughter Paige to brain cancer in 2006, Godard turned much of his energy toward children's cancer causes, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and he still visits hospitals to paint alongside kids who are sick. It is a side of the artist that runs quietly underneath even his most high-rolling subjects.
