About Don't Drink
Don't Drink is a takeoff on Godard's earlier piece Drink. This time the lit sign says the opposite, so the young woman carrying her martini is spilling it out instead of sipping it. As in the sister piece, the light from the lamp post is shaped like a martini glass.
The reversal is the whole joke, staged with the same deliberate light and shadow that make his night scenes read at a glance. If you are ready to start or grow a collection, browse the full range of Michael Godard art for sale.
Editions, sizes & prices of this limited edition giclee
Don't Drink is offered in two editions at a single size, both on gallery-wrapped canvas. The Signed and Numbered Edition of 150 is hand-signed by the artist and individually numbered. The Artist's Proof Edition of 50 is individually numbered and features a one-color paint embellishment. Prices below are the current live listing prices.
| Edition | Size | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Signed & Numbered Edition of 150 | 28" x 35" | $1,195 |
| Artist's Proof Edition of 50 | 28" x 35" | $1,595 |
The print is a giclee, a fine-art process using archival pigment inks, presented on gallery-wrapped canvas. Both editions are fixed print runs, so a sold-out edition will not be reprinted.
A companion to Drink
Don't Drink and Drink share a composition idea, a lamp post whose light forms a martini glass over a night street, and the two read as a pair. Collectors who enjoy the joke in one often add the other, alongside the wider group of martini and nightlife scenes in Godard's catalog.
About Michael Godard
From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"
Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."
The signature style
His pop art is instantly recognizable, high-contrast nightlife scenes staged with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing. Don't Drink applies that craft to a sight gag in which the sign and the glass tell opposite stories.
Beyond the canvas, and giving back
His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
