About Drink

Drink is built on a visual pun. In the artist's own account, he wanted a martini glass in the picture without painting one, so the light from a lamp post takes the shape of a martini glass instead. Below it, on a seedy side of town, a young woman sips her martini because the crosswalk sign says to.

The painting has a sister piece, Don't Drink, in which the sign reverses the instruction and the martini spills. Together they show how Godard turns a single street scene into a running joke. If you are ready to start or grow a collection, browse the full range of Michael Godard art for sale.

A companion to Don't Drink

Drink and Don't Drink share a composition idea: a lamp post whose light forms a martini glass over a night street. Collectors who like one often want the other, and both belong with the martini and nightlife scenes that built Godard's reputation, a natural fit for cocktail and bar wall art.

About Michael Godard

From draftsman and drummer to "Rockstar of the Art World"

Born in 1963 and later based in Las Vegas, Godard studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and at UNLV, and spent years working as a draftsman and commercial illustrator, and drumming in Las Vegas bands, before painting full time. The turning point was a friend's request for a birthday painting about dirty martinis: he answered with personified, animated olive characters full of attitude, and that became the visual language behind the nickname collectors know him by, the "Rockstar of the Art World."

The signature style

His pop art is instantly recognizable, high-contrast nightlife scenes staged with theatrical exaggeration and a satirist's sense of timing. Drink shows that craft in a quieter register, where the joke lives in the light itself rather than in a personified character.

Beyond the canvas, and giving back

His book Don't Drink and Draw, with a foreword by friend and collector Ozzy Osbourne, was named an Art Book of the Year in 2006. Since 2006, following the loss of his daughter Paige to brain cancer at 16, the artist has maintained an ongoing charitable relationship with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and related causes.
