About Michael Godard
Island Golf sits within a small but consistent group of Michael Godard paintings that put his olive characters on the golf course, a subject that fits his broader habit of dropping recognizable characters into settings his collectors know from their own lives. That habit began with the character itself: a friend once commissioned a birthday painting built around dirty martinis, and Godard responded by giving the olive in the glass a face and a personality rather than leaving it as garnish.
