Music was Godard's first career, not a footnote to his second one. Before painting professionally, he spent years as a working drummer in Las Vegas bands, alongside work in architectural drafting, well into his late twenties. Born March 10, 1963, and raised in Pasadena before settling in Las Vegas, he studied at ArtCenter College of Design and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His turn to painting came after a friend asked him for a martini-themed birthday piece, and he answered by giving the olive inside the glass a face and a personality, a decision made during a period when he was living in his car to support his children.
He built his earliest audience trading finished paintings for meals at "drink and draw" nights in Las Vegas bars and restaurants, and that same appreciation for music and celebration runs directly through Margarita Mariachi. Godard's well-known habit of hiding names, dates, and initials inside his compositions likely continues here as well.
His musical background has also shaped his career in more direct ways, including custom guitar artwork for Guns N' Roses and the 2005 album cover for Dishwalla, work that runs parallel to the persona that earned him the nickname "Rockstar of the Art World" through television appearances on A&E's Criss Angel's Mindfreak and American Casino.
Since 2006, following the death of his teenage daughter Paige to brain cancer, Godard has supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Nevada Cancer Institute, regularly visiting hospitals to paint alongside children in treatment.
