Born March 10, 1963, and raised in Pasadena before settling in Las Vegas, he studied at ArtCenter College of Design and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and spent his twenties as a professional drummer in Las Vegas bands, performing late into the night, alongside daytime work as an architectural draftsman. His full-time turn to painting came after a friend's request for a martini-themed birthday piece, answered with a personified olive that became his signature style, developed during a period when Godard was living in his car to support his children.

He built his earliest audience trading finished paintings for meals at "drink and draw" nights in Las Vegas bars and restaurants, an environment defined by exactly the kind of after-dark energy visible in Night Flight.
