"This was inspired by the 2:00 a.m. last drink cutoff time at bars. A male olive plays footsie with the female olive next to him and tries to get lucky as last call approaches. They have been drinking for a while as evidenced by the number of empty martini glasses on the bar next to them. There is a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes on the bar. I don’t usually put cigarettes in my paintings because they are nasty… I usually put a cigar because it is more relaxing." ~ Michael Godard

About Michael Godard
Last Call sits comfortably inside the Martini series that made Michael Godard's name, the body of work built on the very first personified olive he ever painted. A friend had asked for a birthday piece celebrating dirty martinis, and rather than a plain still life, Godard gave the olive in the glass a face and a personality, launching a style that has since expanded to grapes and strawberries while keeping the same bold black backgrounds and saturated color that make each piece pop off the wall.
